The Ohio State University and OCLC to study how people use electronic information resources

Researchers at The Ohio State University and OCLC are conducting a new study to find out how and why students and faculty members use electronic information sources to do research and solve problems. The $1 million, collaborative project is being partially funded with a $480,543 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The remainder of the funding will come from Ohio State and OCLC.

The principal investigator for the project is Brenda Dervin, Professor of Communication at Ohio State. Lynn Silipigni Connaway, OCLC Consulting Research Scientist, and Chandra Prabha, OCLC Senior Research Scientist, are serving as co-investigators. “We know a lot about who is using these electronic resources, when they are using them and where,” Dr. Dervin says. “But there is just a dabbling of research on the hows and whys. We want to know how people are choosing their electronic resources, why they are choosing some resources over others, and how they are fitting them into their personal and professional lives.”

Learn about the top technology issues facing libraries

At each ALA Midwinter Meeting, a group of technology experts who are members of the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) gathers to identify and discuss the top technology issues facing today's libraries. In January 2004, they identified eight issues: XML and interoperability; Radio Frequency Identification; copyright; metasearching; OPACs and user behavior; policies and technology; user interface design; and security and digital rights management. Background information on four of the issues has been posted to the LITA Web site.

The seven experts in attendance were: Marshall Breeding, Library Technology Officer, Vanderbilt University; Walt Crawford, Senior Analyst, Research Libraries Group; Thomas Dowling, Assistant Director of Library Systems, OhioLINK; Clifford Lynch, Executive Director, Coalition for Networked Information; Roy Tennant, Web Design and Services Manager, California Digital Library; Joan Frye Williams, Library and Information Technology Consultant; and Tom Wilson, Director of Information Technology, University of Maryland Libraries.
