UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE CONTRIBUTES 52 MILLIONTH RECORD
 TO WORLDCAT

On April 8, the library at the University of California, Irvine
contributed the 52 millionth bibliographic record to WorldCat,
the OCLC Online Union Catalog. The record was for, "In the heat
of the moment," a videocassette release of a television program
produced in 2000 by the BBC.

OCLC RESEARCH PUBLISHES “THE INCENTIVES TO PRESERVE
 DIGITAL MATERIALS”

In this white paper, OCLC Researcher Brian Lavoie analyzes
incentives for digital preservation and identifies the key
decision-making roles in the digital preservation process. He
also characterizes a core set of organizational models under
which decision-makers might undertake digital preservation and
examines the implications of these models for the incentives to
preserve digital materials. A report on the white paper will be
published in the next issue of the OCLC Newsletter.

WorldCat, which contained 49,544,451 unique bibliographic
records, representing 881,001,291 holding locations, as of
April 12, 2003. Every 5 seconds an OCLC member library fills
an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported
125,232,539 interlibrary loan requests as of April 12, 2003.
Every 2 seconds a library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC
FirstSearch service.
