HERBERT VAN DE SOMPEL WINS FREDERICK G. KILGOUR AWARD
FOR RESEARCH IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Dr. Van de Sompel of the Los Alamos National Laboratories is
being recognized for his significant work in linking technologies
and metadata harvesting that helped create the SFX architecture
and a protocol for collecting metadata. OCLC and the Library and
Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the
American Library Association, sponsor the annual award.

E-BOOK AND DDC CONFERENCES ON THE OCLC CAMPUS, MAY 8-9

"E-BOOK 2003: PRINT COLLECTIONS, E-BOOKS & BEYOND"

Users, creators and critics of e-books will gather to examine the
impact of e-books on the library and publishing environments.
Among the issues addressed will be: archiving technology, market
trends, usage patterns, reader devices and costs of producing and
managing e-books. The conference is sponsored by the University
of Michigan, Ohio State University, Blackwell's Book Services,
the OCLC Institute and the OCLC Digital & Preservation

NETLIBRARY RELEASES IMPROVED ONLINE EBOOK READER

Based on recent usability testing and customer feedback,
netLibrary, a division of OCLC, has released enhancements to the
netLibrary Online eBook Reader that make it easier to use. The
new Reader features a simplified navigation architecture and
offers a 167% increase in total viewing area.

WorldCat, which contained 49,544,451 unique bibliographic
records, representing 881,001,291 holding locations, as of
April 26, 2003. Every 5 seconds an OCLC member library fills
an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported
125,232,539 interlibrary loan requests as of April 26, 2003.
Every 2 seconds a library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC
FirstSearch service.
