Metadata from Indiana postcard collection harvested into WorldCat

CONTENTdm brings these unique images online and into WorldCat for the Indiana Historical Society

The Indiana Historical Society is the first organization to automatically add records from a digitized special collection to WorldCat. Metadata from the society’s Postcards of Indiana,The Jay Small Collection has been harvested, converted to MARC format, and batchloaded into WorldCat by OCLC and is now available to library users using the FirstSearch service. The harvested metadata contains links that connect searchers to the collection’s digital images.

Salvatore G. Cilella, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, IHS, says the rationale behind the decision to register their collection for metadata harvesting by OCLC is “Access, access, access. We want researchers, wherever they are in the world, to find our materials and use them.”

OCLC is the exclusive distributor to libraries of CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software, an easy-to-use software solution that helps institutions organize a variety of digital materials, including photographs, maps and historic documents. Developed by the Center for Information Systems Optimization Laboratory and University Libraries at the University of Washington, CONTENTdm was licensed to DiMeMa Inc. (Digital Media Management) in early 2001 to provide support for the rapidly growing community of CONTENTdm users.

New Web site hopes to transform museums, libraries and archives into dynamic learning places

Inspiring Learning for All, a pioneering new Web site produced by The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council of the U.K., is designed to help cultural heritage organizations improve service and measure their impact on people’s learning. It challenges these organizations to focus their programs and events on creating effective learning environments and opportunities and to build learning partnerships inside and outside of the cultural heritage community. And it provides an extensive range of interactive support materials, such as checklists, templates, reports, research and best practices, as well as a unique “Measure Learning Toolkit,” to help these organizations place learning at the heart of all activities.
