Public libraries meet at WebJunction

OCLC and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on May 12 launched a new, interactive Web site to help public libraries and other institutions make the most of information technology. The resource, called WebJunction, was unveiled at the Great Hall of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Look for an in-depth story about WebJunction's development and how it will impact public access computing in the April issue of the OCLC Newsletter.

Ellensburg Public Library digitizes Black History collection using CONTENTdm

Through Open Eyes: 95 Years of Black History in Roslyn, Washington, a collection sponsored by the Ellensburg Public Library and supported by a grant from the Washington Commission for Humanities, chronicles the cultural history of the former mining town of Roslyn, Washington. Created and organized using CONTENTdm, this new e-resource is part of the library's local history collection, as well as a record in WorldCat. The OCLC number is 50146087, and the entry may be found under the title Through Open Eyes Roslyn Black History.

Finland becomes first DCMI Affiliate

The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) and the National Library of Finland announce that Finland has become DCMI's first National Affiliate. DCMI Affiliates promote the adoption of Dublin Core specifications by providing a training and consulting foundation for local communities of practice.

WorldCat update

Every 15 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which contained 49,770,475 unique bibliographic records, representing 884,616,746 holding locations as of May 10, 2003. Every 5 seconds an OCLC member library fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported 126,187,327 interlibrary loan requests as of May 10, 2003. Every 2 seconds a library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service.
