RLG membership approves proposal to combine with OCLC

RLG’s online products and services will be integrated with OCLC’s, and RLG’s program initiatives will be continued as RLG-Programs, a membership-based organization that operates as a new division of OCLC Programs and Research to support architecture, standards development and best practices.

An FAQ that includes information on the combined organization as well as updates on some specific products and services is available on the RLG and OCLC Web sites. The FAQ is updated as information becomes available.

Online Publishers Association media usage study shows Web now rivals TV in reach, extends impact of all media

The observational research project, “A Day in the Life: An Ethnographic Study of Media Consumption,” tracked the real-time media use of 350 people, recording their actual activities every 15 seconds. The results show that the Web is now clearly a mass media—ranking right alongside other major media when it comes to reach and duration of use. And when it comes to at-work media use, the study found that the Web clearly dominates (with 54.6 percent reach, compared to television’s 21.1 percent), and is the only medium that ranks among the top two at both work and home.

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek purchases NetLibrary eBooks to offer to academic libraries throughout Germany

NetLibrary, a division of OCLC and a leading platform for eContent to libraries worldwide, will provide 1,000 eBook titles to Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Bavaria’s state library.

The purchase is part of a plan by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Germany’s research funding organization, to improve access to electronic content throughout the country.
