WebJunction honors award-winning libraries
during member reception at ALA

The WebJunction Awards Program highlights the extraordinary work of libraries in the United States, Tribal and First Nations and Canada that are committed to providing public access to technology and information in their communities. Grand prize winners for the 2003-2004 program year were announced during a WebJunction member reception at the American Library Association annual conference in Orlando, Florida. They are:

• Lakewood (OH) Public Library, for Innovative Content and Use of Technology

• Lee County (FL) Public Library System, for Technology Planning

• Wicomico County (MD) Free Library, for Building Digital Opportunity through Community Engagement

• South Carolina Association of Public Library Administrators, for Sustainability

First phase of OCLC PAIS Archive now available on FirstSearch

A new retrospective database that chronicles social issues and global public policy, the PAIS Archive provides fast access to social, political and cultural materials published from 1915-1976. It complements the contemporary coverage of PAIS International and provides electronic versions of records previously available only in 62 annually cumulated print editions of the PAIS Bulletin.

The first phase of the archive, which covers 1957-76, is now accessible via the OCLC FirstSearch service. Availability of the full file is projected by year's end.

WorldCat update

Every 12 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which contains more than 55 million records representing 928,688,947 holding locations as of July 3, 2004. Every 4 seconds an OCLC member library fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported 136,937,600 interlibrary loan requests as of July 3, 2004. A library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service every second.
