OCLC PICA acquires Sisis Informationssysteme

Acquisition of German systems provider will enhance service to libraries in Europe

OCLC PICA, a leading library systems and service provider in Europe, has acquired Sisis Informationssysteme GmbH, based in Munich, Germany, in a move designed to combine technologies and enhance services for libraries in Europe.

Sisis Informationssysteme provides library management systems and software primarily to libraries in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The organization provides services to support library acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, interlibrary loan and Web OPACs. More than 150 libraries use Sisis systems; 55 percent are scientific libraries, 25 percent local libraries and 20 percent special libraries.

ALPSP calls on Google to stop digitizing books

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) has called on Google to cease unlicensed digitization of copyright materials with immediate effect, and to enter into urgent discussions with representatives of the publishing industry in order to arrive at an appropriate licensing solution for ‘Google Print for Libraries.’ “We cannot believe that a business which prides itself on its cooperation with publishers could seriously wish to build part of its business on a basis of copyright infringement.”

PREMIS project a finalist for Digital Preservation Award

OCLC and RLG’s international project to improve digital preservation processes has been nominated for a prestigious award from the Digital Preservation Coalition.

PREMIS (Preservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies) is an international working group set up to define a core set of preservation metadata elements, applicable to a broad range of digital preservation activities. Its activities culminated in the release of a Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata.
