The OCLC FirstSearch service now has a new, updated appearance along
with better navigation, more customization options, 42 new
e-journals, and the GeoRef Thesaurus.

In this article from the OLA Quarterly, Gary Houk, OCLC Vice President, Cataloging and Metadata Services, presents a provocative overview of the effects automation has had on cataloging and what needs to be done. "Automation in cataloging in particular still is and has been used as a tool to get old tasks accomplished more productively, rather than as a tool to create more productive ways of getting things done."

WorldCat update
Every 12 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which contains more than 52 million records representing 890,759,732 holding locations as of July 19, 2003. Every 4 seconds an OCLC member library fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported 127,875,811 interlibrary loan requests as of July 19, 2003. A library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service every second.
