WebJunction hits membership milestone

WebJunction.org continues to grow. Last month, registered members topped the 15,000 mark and the number of unique visitors surpassed 160,000. In addition, three new states—New Hampshire, Vermont and Arizona—joined WebJunction’s community partner program. Take a look at their sites: nh.webjunction.org, vt.webjunction.org and az.webjunction.org.

WebJunction is an online community where library staff meet to share ideas, solve problems, take online courses—and have fun. Visit the WebJunction Web site to learn more about this exciting new community.

Amazon no longer the role model for e-commerce design

According to a recent issue of AlertBox, a biweekly e-column by software engineer and consultant Jakob Nielson, who has been called the “guru of Web usability” by the New York Times, Amazon is still the world’s best
e-commerce site, but many of its strengths are unique to its status and would not carry over to sites that emulate its design. What’s bad about Amazon.com?

  • Cluttered pages

  • Internet-wide search feature

  • Advertising on product pages

  • Lousy user interface for specialized product categories

  • Lack of integration with its international sites

  • Co-branding

LITA publication features OCLC research initiatives
