Robert S. Martin to join OCLC
as consultant after completing term as IMLS Director

Robert S. Martin, who recently completed his four-year term as Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington, D.C., will join OCLC as Special Advisor to the President for Cultural Heritage Institutions. Dr. Martin will consult for OCLC on special assignments beginning August 1.
“I have followed the work of OCLC closely over the past four years, and I am optimistic that I can help OCLC extend the value of its services to even more cultural heritage institutions around the world,” said Dr. Martin.

Can cell phones become a key learning tool?

There are 1.5 billion cell phones in operation around the world, and a large percentage of them are in the hands of students. Yet these phones are barred in most classrooms because they interrupt lessons and can enable cheating. An article in Innovate, The Online Journal of Education by Marc Prensky encourages educators to reconsider their view of mobile technology—and to imagine a pedagogy that embraces its potential. Essentially small computers, cell phones can support language lessons, display animations of medical and chemical processes, be used for polling and testing, serve as a gateway to larger learning resources—and so much more.
