OCLC partners with Library of Congress, Die Deutsche Bibliothek to develop Virtual International Authority File

The project will virtually combine the personal name authority files of the Library of Congress and the German national library into a single name authority service. The long-term goal: to include the authoritative names from many national libraries into a common service available to users worldwide via the Web.

Latin American libraries introduce virtual reference with QuestionPoint

QuestionPoint, the collaborative virtual reference service developed by the Library of Congress and OCLC has been purchased by BIREME (a Specialized Center of the Pan American Health Organization) for its Virtual Health Library in Brazil and the Universidad Veracruzana in Xálapa, Veracruz, Mexico.

Learn how to analyze your collection, digitize unique resources, develop a non-English collection, manage a digital library, streamline interlibrary loan and start a virtual reference service during the September and October OCLC Web Information sessions, which are available at no cost. You'll access the sessions via the Web with audio by conference call. Each session includes a complete overview of an OCLC service and an opportunity for library staff to ask questions.

WorldCat update

Every 14 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which contains more than 52 million records representing 895,056,335 holding locations as of August 30, 2003. Every 4 seconds an OCLC member library fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported 128,750,231 interlibrary loan requests as of August 30, 2003. A library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service every second.
