NetLibrary signs agreement to distribute titles from Penguin
NetLibrary,
a leading provider of eBooks to libraries worldwide, has signed a distribution
agreement with Penguin Group (USA), an affiliate of Penguin Group, the
worlds second-largest English-language trade book publisher.
Upcoming
NetLibrary releases include hundreds of Penguin best-selling frontlist
and classic titles such as Pride and Prejudice, by Jane
Austen; Angel of Death, by Jack Higgins; The Hanged Mans
Song, by John Sandford; and Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The
Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, by Lynn Truss.

Blue Ribbon Panel to strategize NISOs future
With a charter to evaluate the progress, challenges and
opportunities of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO),
11 experts from industry, academia and the library community have accepted
seats on NISOs Blue Ribbon Panel. The panel will play a central
role in a year-long strategic planning exercise, which NISOs Board
of Directors launched in May 2004. Clifford Lynch, Executive Director,
Coalition for Networked Information, will chair the panel, whose formal
report will be open for public review and comment later this year. Lorcan
Dempsey, OCLC Vice President, Research and Chief Strategist, also will
serve on the panel.

Arabic materials now available through OCLC Language Sets
Three sets are currently available: Arabic Books for Children, Arabic
Fiction Books for Adults and Arabic Mixed Books for Adults. For descriptions
of the collections, go to the OCLC Web
store.
Language Sets
allow English-speaking librarians to build multilingual collections. Books
are cataloged in full MARC format and arrive ready to shelve, with holdings
already set in WorldCat.

MLA and JISC join DCMI Affiliate Program
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and Joint Information
Systems Committee (JISC) will be the United Kingdoms official representative
on the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative Directorate, presenting the views
of all U.K. public sector institutions at an international level.

WorldCat update
Every
12 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which
contains more than 56 million records representing 936,553,705 holding
locations as of September 18, 2004. Every 4 seconds an OCLC member library
fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported
138,633,250 interlibrary loan requests as of September 18, 2004. A library
user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service every second.
