Connecticut State Library preserving the electronic public record with the OCLC Digital Archive

Each year, more documents of the Connecticut state government are born digital and exist solely in electronic format with no print backup. To keep these digital documents from disappearing, the Connecticut State Library captures and preserves them using the OCLC Digital Archive. In July, the library harvested and archived the Web site of outgoing governor, John G. Rowland, adding these pages to the                                                  nearly 3,000 documents archived to                                                  date.

Web tool may banish broken links

Students have developed a tool that could mean broken Web links are history. Peridot, developed by U.K. intern students at IBM, scans company Web links and replaces outdated information with other relevant documents and links. It alerts Web administrators not only to links that are broken, but also where the original page has gone. Peridot also can tell which links have changed and the degree of change in content.

OCLC continues to bring virtual reference, course management software and libraries together

OCLC has completed the second phase of an e-learning pilot that allowed students to instantly reach reference librarians and library services directly from pages supported by campus course management systems.

Ten institutions worked with faculty to integrate the QuestionPoint virtual reference desk and supporting library services into their course pages. Working with faculty allowed the libraries and OCLC to develop an understanding of their pedagogical goals and objectives. For students, the link provided one-click access to the library and a reference librarian at the point of need and within the context of the course.

Feedback was so positive that OCLC is now working with courseware management providers to allow campuses to roll out broad implementations of this service link.
