Baltimore Hebrew University Library contributes 57 millionth record to WorldCat

Entered on November 19, the record was for the book Unrecorded Hasmonean Coins from the J. Chaim Kaufman collection, Part II. The 56 millionth record was input on July 23, 2004 by The Institute of Governmental Studies, Berkeley, California.

Google Scholar offers access to academic information

Google has launched a new Google Scholar search service, providing the ability to search for scholarly literature across the Web. “The goal is to allow and enable users to search over scholarly content,” said Anurag Acharya, a Google engineer leading the project. Much of this material has been added to Google over the past few months. However, the new service allows searchers to specifically search against just the academic material.

Spanish Language Outreach pilot program begins at WebJunction

WebJunction, the online community dedicated to addressing emerging training needs of librarians, has launched a Spanish Language Outreach pilot program to discover how best to equip local library staff with knowledge and resources to meet the technology needs of Spanish speakers in their communities.

The 18-month program is a partnership between WebJunction and the state libraries of New Mexico, Colorado, Illinois and Florida.

The program began in September, and the first Outreach Training Institute was held in Seattle on November 9 and 10.

WebJunction's ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive, nationwide online resource for training, materials and library staff interaction.

WorldCat update

Every 10 seconds an OCLC member library adds a new record to WorldCat, which contained more than 57 million records representing 945,260,768 holding locations as of November 20, 2004. Every 4 seconds an OCLC member library fills an interlibrary loan request using WorldCat, which has supported 140,839,903 interlibrary loan requests as of November 20, 2004. A library user searches WorldCat using the OCLC FirstSearch service every second.
