What will be the top technology trends for 2005?

Here are some of the top trends that will dominate the world of technology in 2005, according to Red Herring, a media company that covers innovation, technology, financing and entrepreneurial activity. How will these trends impact libraries?

  • The Web goes to “pieces.” Don’t blink—Web services become real.

  • Home sweet digital home. Will the PC, the TV or some other device be the new media center in the home? The war for the living room intensifies.

  • Internet telephony. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), the technology that sends phone calls over the Internet, becomes a household word.

  • Where is that file? The amount of information people store on personal computers is exploding. Desktop search tools, still in their infancy in 2004, see significant growth.

  • The end of Moore’s Law. The rule that says computer chips have twice the power of their predecessors every 18 months runs into an even higher authority—the laws of physics. Recent evidence suggests that the great leaps forward in computing power become smaller hops.
